    IPS
    - full form, “Indian Police Service”, and simply known as Police Service. India gained independence on 1947 and after one year the “Indian Police Service” was established on 1948. There are three All India Service .They are IAS (Indian Administration Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service) and IPS (Indian Police Service). These all are the most prestigious civil services in India. The Ministry of Home Affairs is the authority of IPS. The IPS officers give their contribution to the nation. Some of the famous IPS officers in India are –India’s first lady IPS Officer Kiran Bedi, Shivdeep Lande, U Sagayam and many more.


    Department of IPS

    In IPS service, there are many functional departments. An IPS officer gives more importance to follow the disciplines and law and order.

    Responsibilities of an IPS officer

    As IPS post is an extremely respected and prestigious post in India, so it comes with big responsibilities. In each district, an IPS officer is the head of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Superintendent.

    The most important responsibilities and duties of an IPS officer are:-

    ·       Stop the crimes

    ·       Preventing accidents

    ·       Investigation of crimes

    ·       Registration FIR

    ·       Granting permission for any public functions ( political or religious)

    ·       Drug trafficking

    ·       Disaster management

    ·       Counter terrorism

    ·       Maintaining peace among the public

    ·       Providing security and protection to VIPs, Prime Minister, Chief Minister

    ·       Border policing

    ·       Leading and commanding the posts of high level in the Indian Intelligence Agencies like CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), CID (Criminal Investigation Department), R&AW (Research and Analysis Wing), IB (Intelligence Bureau) etc.

    ·       Leading and commanding the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Security Guard (NSG), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), etc.

     

                 Qualifications

    Graduate candidates of any stream from recognised University can join the IPS examination. The candidates from Bhutan and Nepal also join the exam.

    The maximum age of the candidates should be 32 years for General category but the category of SC/ST are given a five years of exemption. The maximum age of the candidates of OBC category is 35 years.

    The maximum age for the candidates of physically handicapped is 42 years (General); 45 years (OBC); 47years (SC/ST).

    For the appointment of IPS post, the candidates have to clear the Civil Service exam, conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

    General category-165cm (Male); 150cm (Female)

    ST category- 160cm (Male); 145cm (Female)

    All male and female candidates who are Ghurkha, Assamese and Kumauni etc. are given a 5cm exemption.

    Chest

    84cm with 5cm expansion (Male)

    79cm with 5cm expansion (Female)

     

    Eyesight

    6/6 or 6/9 (Healthy)

    6/12 or 6/9 (Weak)

    Near Vision-J1 (Good)

                         -J2 (Weak)

     

                           Examination

    The examination is taken in three parts.

    Preliminary Exam

    Preliminary exam is the first stage of Civil Service Exam. The Preliminary exam consists of two papers- Paper1 and Paper2.

    Paper-I = Total marks of this paper is 200 and the time limit is 2 hours. In this paper, the subjects are Indian History and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Governance and Monarchy of India such as Political system, Constitutions, Panchayati Raj, Public policy etc. ; Social and Economic Development; Environmental Ecology; Change of Climate; Bio- Diversity; General Science.

    Paper-II = The total marks of this paper is also 200 and the time limit is 2 hour. In this paper, the questions are based on Comprehension, Interpersonal skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making, problem solving, mental ability, basic generality, data interpretation.

     

    Main Exam

    After clearing the Preliminary exam, the candidates are allowed to appear in the Main Exam. The Main exam is a written exam on total 9 papers. The 2 papers, out of 9 papers are for qualifying and remaining 7 papers are for merit.

     

    Interview

    The candidates who clear the Main Exam are called for personal interview. This interview is about 45 minutes. The interview of the candidates is taken in front of the panel. After the interview, the merit list is prepared which is on the basis of the total marks obtained by the candidates in the main exam.

    Without clearing UPSC, the candidates can also become an SP through clearing state PSC exam which is taken 8 to 10 years.

    •  SC/ST candidates – Unlimited times
    •  Physical Handicapped- 9 times (General, OBC)
    •  Physical Handicapped SC/ST – Unlimited times
