     Introduction

    A river is a natural water body that looks like a silver ribbon that flows downward under the force of gravity. River may be deep and wide or shallow. Rivers can be large or long and short. Some rivers have enough water throughout the year but some rivers have enough water only when there is heavy rainfall or in rainy season. Generally small rivers are called creek, rivulet, stream and rill. Rivers and streams cover approximately 0.1% of the Earth’s surface. River begins at a starting point which is called a source of the river. The sources of the rivers include rainfall, snowmelt or glaciers, big rivers and lakes. The path in which a river flows is called river course or course. The ending point of the rivers is called mouth which can be the seas or oceans, lakes, river basins, or other large water bodies. Rivers are found naturally on all continents on Earth including Antarctica. The Amazon River is the largest river worldwide which begins from the high Andes Mountains of Peru and the ending point is the Atlantic Ocean. River Nile, which is located in the Middle East, is the longest river on the earth, stretching over 6853km. One of the most beautiful river is the Cano Cristales River in Colombia. There are more than 165 large rivers and more than thousands of small rivers in the world. There are different types of rivers like the perennial river, periodic river, episodic river, exotic river, tributary river, distributary river, mature river, underground river etc. In India, the important rivers are Ganga, Brahmaputra, Yamuna, Godavari, Kaveri, Krishna, Sabarmati, Indus etc. Most Indian rivers originate from The Mount Himalaya, Vindhya and Satpura ranges and Sahyadri or Western Ghats and drain into the Bay of Bengal. 8 major river systems with more than 400 rivers present in India so India is considered to be the “land of rivers”.     The Importance of the River

    Rivers are very important to human beings because most of the big cities and civilizations were built on the banks of rivers since prehistoric times so rivers are considered as the backbone of human civilization. It is impossible to describe the importance of the river in a few sentences.

    • Rivers are one of the important sources of freshwater. Freshwater is used for drinking, cooking, cleaning and many other purposes. Without rivers human life can't exist because 96% of the water is saline water on the earth which we can’t consume.

    • The first human civilization was developed on the banks of rivers such as the Indus River Valley, Nile River Valley etc. At present many villages, towns or villages have also developed on the banks of the river.

    • Rivers are the home of many aquatic animals and plants who are very important for the ecosystem and in the food chain 

    • When rivers flow in the mountains they produce a lot of current. The fast flowing rivers produce electricity via hydroelectric power plants and watermills.

    • Rivers carry sediment and deposit them at the mouth of the river and build up deltas. When the rivers overflow their banks, the sediments deposit in the surrounding lands or flood plains. These floodplains and delta are very rich in fertile and these floodplains and deltas are extremely fertile and very good for agriculture.

    • Rivers are one of the important routes for transportation of goods from one place to another which improves the economy of a country.

    • Rivers provide adventure, leisure and happiness. River rafting is an adventure sport played in the river.


    Disadvantages of the river

    • The most important disadvantage of rivers which is still faced by mankind is flood. The floods destroy the surrounding agricultural fields, villages, properties, resulting in the loss of many human and animal lives.

    • Polluted rivers water are the home of many diseases as well as mosquitoes and germs.

    • Some rivers dry in the summer season as well as they change their course or route so water transport by these rivers is problematic.

    Rivers are the lifeline of many civilizations and play a vital role for the existence of life on earth. The rivers are getting polluted due to our indifference.
