    1.                 The Farmer and His Three Sons

    In a village, there lived an old farmer with his three sons. His sons always quarrelled with each other. They did not love one another. Seeing this, the old farmer was very sad. One day he called his three sons and gave them a bundle of sticks and asked them to break the bundle one by one. They tried to break the bundle but could not do so. Then the old farmer untied the bundle and gave one stick to each of his three sons and asked them to break it. Now they easily break the stick. The old farmer said to his sons “My sons, now you have seen that you cannot break the sticks when are tied together but when they are separated, then you can break it easily. This is the strength of unity. If you all are united then nobody can harm you, so never quarrel with each other and live peacefully”.

    After that day, the three sons never ever quarrelled among each other.

    Moral: United we stand, divided we fall.

     

    2.       Greedy Dog

    One day a dog had stolen a piece of meat from a butcher shop and ran away with the piece of meat in his mouth. He was looking for a safer place to eat the meat. When was passing by a stream then he saw his own reflection in the stream water. He stupidly thought that it was another dog with a larger piece of meat in his mouth. The greedy dog also wanted to get the meat, so he barked at the dog and jumped into the water. His own stolen piece of meat fell from his mouth into the water and was drowned into the water. Alas!!! The greedy dog did not get anything.

    Moral: Grasp all, lose all.


    3.   The Fox and The Crow

    One day, a crow got a piece of meat. She flew and sat on a branch of a tree to eat it. Suddenly a fox came there. The fox wanted to eat the meat, so he made a trick. He said the crow, “You look so beautiful! Your black feathers are looking so nice! I am sure your voice must be very sweet. Please sing a song for me. I am eagerly waiting to hear your melodious singing”.

    Hearing this, the crow was very pleased and she tried to sing. As soon as she had opened her beak to sing, the piece of meat fell down. The fox didn’t waste a moment; he took it and ran away.

    Moral: Don’t believe in flattery.

     

    4.           Jackdaws With Peacock Feathers

    Jackdaws are not beautiful birds. One day, a jackdaw wanted to become beautiful just like the peacocks and wanted to leave his own group. He collected some peacock feathers and stuck them into his own feathers. “How beautiful I am looking now!” exclaimed the jackdaw. He went to join the peacocks but the peacocks fell upon him and pulled out all the peacock feathers and drove him away.

    Moral: We have to be happy with what we have.

     

     5.                       Selfish Friend

    Ram and Yadav were two friends. One day they were going to a nearby village. When they were passing through a forest, then Ram said to Yadav, “Friend, if any wild animal attacks us, what will we do?” Hearing this Yadav said that, “Don’t worry! I will stand for you and save you”. Suddenly a big black bear came towards them. Seeing the bear, Yadav at once climbed up a tall tree and did not think about his friend. Ram was helpless as he could not climb the tree. He knew that bears do not eat dead persons, so he laid on the ground and acted as a dead man. The bear came near him and thought him dead, went away. Then Yadav came down from the tree and asked “What did the bear whisper in your ears?” Hearing this Ram said, “The bear told me that never trust the friend who leave his friend in danger”

    Moral: Don’t nurture friendship with selfish people.

     

    6.                                   Four Friends

    In a forest, there lived a deer, a crow, a mouse and a turtle. They were good friends. Every evening, they met together under a tree. One day, the turtle was caught by a hunter’s net. In the evening, when the turtle was not seen, the other friends were worried about the turtle. The crow flew over the trees and found the turtle in the net. He came back to the others and told about the turtle. They all made a plan to escape him from the net. The deer laid on the ground and acted as it was dead and the crow sat on him and acted as he was eating the deer. The hunter saw the deer; he was so happy and thought, “How lucky am I!! I also get a deer!” He went towards them to get the deer. At that moment, the mouse cut the net and released the turtle. The turtle went into the nearby river as soon as possible. The deer also ran away into the jungle and the crow flew away. The hunter didn’t get neither the deer nor the turtle.

    Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.

     

    7.        The Mice and The Cat

    In a house, there lived some mice. They moved here and there in that house and ate everything from the kitchen. The master of the house was very disturbed about the mice. So, one day he brought a cat in the house. Seeing the big cat, the mice could not come out of their hole. They were in trouble as they didn’t go to the kitchen to eat. So the mice held a meeting to get rid of this problem. But they could not solve the problem. At last, a young mouse said, “Friends, let us tie a bell to the neck of the cat so that when the cat will come near us, we can hear the ring of the bell and will ran away”. Everyone said that, it was a good idea. Then an old mouse asked “Who will tie the bell to the neck of the cat?” The joy of the mice was disappeared in a moment and they left the place.

    Moral: Easier said than done

     

    8.    The Tiger and The Traveller

    In a jungle, there lived an old tiger. He could not hunt animals as he was old enough. One day he thought of a plan to kill the animals. He sat in a bush near a marsh. The tiger had a golden bangle. He showed the golden bangle to the travellers and asked them to take it as a gift. Nobody wanted to take the bangle as they afraid of him and ran away. One day, a greedy traveller accepted the tiger’s offer but he said to the tiger “I can’t trust you”. The tiger said “I am old enough and now I have realised that it is sin to kill anyone. Kindness is a great virtue. So I will not kill you and give you this golden bangle as a gift”. The greedy traveller believed the wicked animal and crossed the marsh to reach the tiger. But Alas! He found himself in a pool of mud. The tiger did not waste his time and jumped on him and killed him.

    Moral: Never trust a wicked fellow

     

    9.            The Fox and The Goat

    One day, a fox fell into a well. The well was not very deep and was almost dry. The fox was tried to come out of the well but could not do so. He tried again and again but was failed. That time, a thirsty goat came there and asked the fox “Hello, Mr Fox, what are you doing there?” The cunning fox said “I am drinking water. This water is fresh and very sweet in taste. I never drink such sweet water before”. The goat trusted the fox and wanted to drink the sweet water. So he jumped into the well. Without wasting any time, the fox got upon the goat’s horns and came out of the well easily. The cunning fox said to the goat “foolish goat, you have big horns but no brain in your head” and ran away.

    Moral: Look before you leap.


       10.              The Brahman and The Mongoose

    In Ujjain, there lived a brahman and his wife. They had a baby son. They also had a pet mongoose. One day when the baby was sleeping in the room, the brahman’s wife went to the river to take a bath, leaving the mongoose in charge of her son. The brahman was not at the house. Suddenly, a big snake came out of the hole in that room where the baby was sleeping. Seeing the snake, the mongoose jumped on it and fought with it. After a few minutes, the mongooses killed the snake and tear it into pieces. After sometime, the brahman came back home and saw the mongoose in front of the baby’s room. The mongoose’s mouth was covered with blood. Seeing this, the brahman thought that the mongoose had killed his son. He got angry and killed the mongoose with a big stick. He ran into the room and saw that, his son was sleeping peacefully and beside him, a dead snake was lying on the floor. The brahman realised that he had done a big mistake and started to cry.

    Moral: Don’t do anything in haste.
