Size of Eagles
Eagle is a bird of prey, belong to the family
Accipitridae. 60 different eagle species are found in Eurasia and Africa, 14
species live in North America, Central and South America and in Australia. In
North America, 2 species are found. In Australia, there live 3 species and 9
species are living in North America.
Eagle is a
large and strong birds of prey, having head and sharp, hooked beaks. The
smaller species such as booted eagle is the same size as the Common buzzard or
red-tailed hawk. The smallest eagle species is the Great Nicober Serpent eagle
or South Nicober Serpent eagle, weighs about 450gm and can grow about 40cm.
The length of the New Guinea Harpy eagle is about 75cm
and the Philippine eagle is about 90cm in length.
The Size of Bald
Eagle
The Bald eagle is a bird of prey, native to North
America and the National Bird of the United States. The size of the
Bald eagle is70cm to 103cm long. Female Bald eagles are about 25% large than
male bald eagles. Adult male Bald eagle weighs 7 to 10 pounds while the female
Bald eagle weighs about 14 pounds. Male Bald eagle’s wingspan is 1.8m to 2.3m
but as female bald eagle is larger in size than the male so their wingspan can
reach 2.5 in length and mass is up to 6.5kg. The size of bald eagles depends on
where they live. The Bald eagles that live in South Carolina, weigh 3.30kg and
wingspan can reach up to 1.90m. The smaller size of Bald eagles weigh is about
4.15kg is listed in Florida. In winter season, their weight can reach 4.75kg
because during this time they spend most of their time to forage. The largest
Bald eagles are found in Alaska. This largest Bald eagle weighs over 7kg and
its wingspan may be 2.45m.
The Bold eagle
is a sea eagle. It has blackish-brown body but solid white head. The bald eagle
derives its name for its white head which is not bald but covered with white
feathers. Its tail is medium long and slightly wedge-shaped. Their strong, muscular legs are bright yellow in color and
have no feathers. Bald eagle has four sharp talons each of
their foot, three talons are in front facing and one larger talon, called the
“hallux” in the back facing forward. The
powerful legs muscles provide the crushing strength of each talon is at least
400 pounds per square. Their sharp, hooked beak is yellow in color.
Young eagles or
eaglets are born grey but later the color of the plumage turn brown. They
develop their normal white heads and tails at the age of four to five years.
Bold eagles can live 35 tears in the wild.
The Size of
Golden Eagle
The Golden eagle is one of the very large birds of prey. The
size of the Golden eagle is 66cm to 102cm in length. Adult male Golden eagle is
smaller than female Golden eagle. Their wingspan is 6 feet to 8 feet. Female
Golden eagles are also heavier than males. Female of the Himalayan
Golden eagle is about 37% heavier and have nearly 9%
longer wings
The largest subspecies of male Golden eagle weighs 5.6
pounds and female weighs 7 pounds. Normally, male Golden eagle weighs around 7
pound and female around 11 pound. The maximum size of gold eagle is
controversial. The wingspan of the Captive Golden eagles may be 2.80m and mass
of 12kg.
The length of
their tail is 26 to 38cm and beak is 6cm. The length of their powerful
hallux-claw is between 4 to 6cmm. Both sexes of the Golden eagle is dark brown
with some grey on its inner wings and tail. The color of the back of the crown
and nape is golden in color that is the reason, it is called Golden eagle.
A young golden eagle or eaglets has light patches on
its wings, and a wide white stripe on its tail. When they reach 4 to 6 years of
age, adult coloration is completed.
Golden eagle is
one of the largest birds of prey in the Northern Hemisphere. The golden eagle
is the National bird Afghanistan, Mexico, Egypt, Germany, and Scotland. The
golden eagle is very swift and their diving speed is over 150 miles per hour.
Golden eagle can live 30 years in the wild.
The Size of
Harpy Eagle
The Harpy eagle or the American harpy eagle is one of the
largest and most powerful extant species in the world. The female Harpy eagle
is almost double in size that of the male. They can grow between 89cm and 100cm
in length. Male Harpy eagle weighs 4 to 6kg while female Harpy eagle weighs 6kg
to 9kg. A captive female Harpy eagle “Jezebel”, weighed 12.3kg. The wingspan of
the Harpy eagle can be 175cm to 225cm and their wing chord is 54cm to 63cm
long. Their tail is 37cm to 42cm long and tarsus is 11.5cm to 13cm long. Their
upper side is covered with dark grey feathers and the underpart is white but
the feathers of their tarsi are striped black. Harpy eagle has a broad black
band which separates its head and belly. Its grey head is crowned with a double
crest. The color of its upper part of tail is black with three grey bands but
the underside has three white bands. Its sharp, hooked beak is black and the
color of its tarsi and legs are yellow. The length of its tarsi is 12cm to 13cm
long. Its sharp, thick back talons are 13cm long.
The Size of Martial
Eagle
Martial eagles are very large, powerful eagle and one of
largest species of booted eagle. Martial eagles live in Sub-Saharan Africa. It
can grow up to 96cm and the wingspan will be 187cm to 226cm. The Martial eagle gets the fourth position in wingspan
among living eagles. The Martial eagle is the largest eagle in Africa, weighs
about 14 pounds (6,5kg). Its body is covered with dark brown feathers but its
belly is white with black streaks. Its powerful, strong legs are white in color
and have sharp talons. It has a short tail. The eyes of The Martial eagle are
bright yellow and their beak and feet are greenish and talons are black in
color.
The Size of
Steller’s Sea Eagle
Steller’s Sea Eagle is the largest sea eagle, found in Japan, Korea and Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. This eagle weighs up to 12 pound to 20 pound and wingspan may be 2.2m to 2.5m. Steller’s Sea Eagle is the heaviest eagle in the world after Harpy eagle and Philippine eagle. Females weighs from 6,195 to 9,500 g while males weighs 4,900 to 6,800 g. Steller's sea eagle can grow from 85 to 105 cm long. The length of male Steller’s Sea eagle is 89cm while female is about 100cm long. They are 55mm shorter than Harpy eagle. They have short tail and a large beak. Steller's sea eagle's bill is probably the largest of any living eagle, from the gape to the tip is around 117 mm.
