    History of Book

    Books are an important medium of study that can be printed on paper or in electronic form. Books are composed of a set of pages and bound together inside two covers. In ancient times, books were written manually on vellum which was made up of animal skin; thick paper or papyrus as well as other materials. These ancient books are called codex or manuscripts. Maya codex or codices were written on bark paper by Maya people which are folding books. 
    In ancient civilizations, the people also wrote on clay tablets, metal sheets, stones as well as tree bark or bones. The texts were written with different types of ink which were made from gum, soot, iron vitriol, and gall nuts. 

    Codex Argenteus is a luxurious manuscript, written in the 6th century which was written on purple parchment with gold and silver. 

    The printing revolution started in Europe, when  Johannes Gutenberg, who was a goldsmith, invented the mechanical running-type printing press, around 1440 in Germany. The first printing press arrived in colonial America in the mid-17th century in response to a growing demand for the Bible and other religious literature.

The Gutenberg Bible, also known as the 42-line Bible, was printed in his movable metal type and is considered the most valuable and oldest printed book. "The Tale of Genji" is believed to be the first novel, written in the 11th century by Murasaki Shikibu, a Japanese court lady.

Researchers found that people who read books lived almost 2 years longer than those who didn't read either. Reading books is an exercise for the brain that improves memory function.

    Reading books at home enhances later school performance as well as increases vocabulary, writing skills, builds good communication skills, and boosts self-esteem. Reading books requires undivided attention, so it enhances the ability to concentrate. By reading books on different subjects our knowledge increases and we become more knowledgeable.
