Introduction

 A computer is an electronic device capable of processing, storing, and displaying information. Computer plays an important role in day to day lives of human beings. Nowadays we cannot imagine our daily life without computer. The word computer stands for “Common Operating Machine Purposely Used for Technological and Educational Research”. The word computer has been taken from the Greek word compute meaning calculate.

History of Computer

In 19^th century, Charles Babbage, an English mathematician and mechanical engineer first created a programmable computer so he is considered the “Father of the computer”. He designed the Analytical Engine which is the basic framework of the computers of today are based on. Computers are classified into three generations and each generation gave an improved computer. The main five generations are-

·       First generation (1946-1959)

·       Second generation (1959-1965)

·       Third generation (1965-1971)

·       Fourth generation (1971-1980)

·       Fifth generation (1980-onwards)

The giant ENIAC that stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator) was the first substantial computer by John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania built in U.S.

Parts of Computer

The computer consists of two basic and main elements, hardware and software. A computer works through three steps- input, processing and output. The input devices are mouse, keyboard, touchscreen, microphone, webcam, touchpad etc. Common output devices are monitor, printer, speaker, plotters, headphones etc. The common processing devices of computer are CPU, GPU, Motherboard, Network card, video card etc.

The computer hardware is the physical parts of a computer which are physically tangible such as keyboard, monitor, processor etc. Software is a set of instructions used to operate computers. Application software and  System software are the two kinds of software.

Types of Computer

According to the performance, power and size, there are seven types of computers such as

·       Mainframe computer

·       Workstation computer

·       Microcontroller

·       Smartphone

Super computer is the most expensive and fast computer, used to solve very complex science and engineering problems. Example: K Computer, Columbia.

Uses of Computer

Computers play a major role in our personal and professional lives. Today computers are important for the mankind. Computers are used everywhere and in every field for accuracy, storage capacity, diligence, versatility, reliability, automation and cost.

Educational field

The students of school, colleges or any educational institute use computer and internet. Online degree, programs, courses; classes for students are possible for computers. Students also get eBooks, eNewspaper, Blogs etc. which are very beneficial for them.

Business fields

The people start, run, manage and grow the business by using the computer. Computer is used for payroll calculation, budgeting, sales analysis, maintenance of stocks etc.

Banking field

Banks provide many facilities through computers such online accounting, checking balance, making deposits, over-drafts, and many more which save our time.

Hospital

Computers play an important role in hospital, labs and dispensaries. Computers are used to keep the record of patients and medicines, scanning, diagnosing, ECG, EEG CT Scan etc.

Computers also used in defence, weather forecasting, science and make easy to communicate.

Disadvantages of Computer

Computers provide many services which beneficial for us but computer addiction has a variety of negative effect on our lives. Today people spend more time on computer that creates distance from family and friends. Computer addiction can cause physical damages such as insomnia, stress, eye-problems, obesity and also affects our digestive and immune systems. Computer addition and video game distract students from education.

Conclusion

Computers have changed our lives. Today we have information of our fingertips. Computer save our time and has made our works easier and faster. Computer is good or bad, it only depends on how we use or misuse it.

Computer is an electronic device which is used in every field in our life.  The word "computer" was taken from a Latin word "computare" which means "To count". The analytical engine was the first computer invented by Charles Babbage in 1837.

We use a computer to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the web, edit or create spread sheets, presentations and even videos. Everything we do on the computer, depend on both hardware and software such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, motherboard, speakers, printer, CPU etc.

 Computers come in many shapes and sizes. The name different types of computers are desktop, laptop, tablet, server, smartphone etc. On the basis of technology and also data handling, computers are classified into three categories:  -Digital computer, Analog computer and Hybrid computer. A computer system consists of three main parts- input, processing and output.

Computers have become a part of our lives nowadays. Computers are used to create, edit, store, and print the documents easily and quickly, store our projects, eBooks, documents, movies, pictures, songs, connect to your long-distance friends and family members, play games. Computer also used to help physically challenged people. Stephen Hawking was not able to speak so he used a computer to speak. Blind people use special software to read what's on the screen.

 There are many benefits to using a computer, but there are also many disadvantages. Computer addiction can harm us physically, psychologically and socially.

A major benefit of computers is the time and effort saved and the overall cost to complete a particular task. Computers have taken the world to a different height.
