    Introduction

    Rose is one of the most beautiful and fascinating flowers also called the “queen of the flower”. The name “Rose” is taken from the Latin word “Rosa”. More than 300 species of rose flowers are found in the world and most are found in Asia. A smaller number of roses are also found in North America, Europe and the North western part of Africa, Rose is the favorite flower of most of the people for its colour, beauty and fragrance. Rose species, hybrids and cultivars are also grown widely. Roses have gained cultural importance in different societies.

    Description of Rose

    Rose plants will be erect, trailing as well as climbing shrubs. The stalks are usually decorated with thorns of different shapes and sizes. The leaves are oval in shape and the edge of the leaves are sharply toothed.

    The size of rose flowers varies. Tiny sized rose will be 1.25cm whereas the hybrid rose may be more than 17.8cm in diameter. Most rose species have at least five petals but the Rosa sericea or the silky rose has four petals.

    Now more than 2500 rose varieties are found with different colors like red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, white, as well as a lot of bi-colored roses are found in the world. Scientists produced a true blue colored rose after 13 years of research because blue roses do not grow in nature.

    Growing roses is relatively easy. The rose plant grows well in well-drained soil with one part garden soil and one part bio-compost. The berry-like fruits known as hips are grown on the rose plant which are red to orange in color and are edible. Hybrid tea roses are the most popular class of garden roses which are seen in the gardens, greenhouses, as well as florist shops.

    Rose is the most popular and versatile flowering shrub but is infected by the fungi. The most common diseases of rose are black spot, stem canker, powdery mildew, rust, rose rosette disease etc. The common insect pest called Aphids is harmful for the rose leaves and young stems. 

    Roses are well-known ornamental plants and are used for making attar, perfumes. The rose hips are rich in vitamin C. Blue rose is the symbol of mystery. The red rose symbolizes love and respect, the yellow rose symbolizes friendship and happiness, the white rose symbolizes holiness and true love. In the past, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans used roses for their various rituals. They made oils from the rose petals. The petals of the roses have vitamin A, C, E and are good for antiseptic and anti-oxidant. Rose essential oil is used to treat asthma, nausea, bacterial infection etc. For its beauty and bright color, rose is one of the main decorative items of the occasion. Rose petals are used in decorating the sweets, cakes and also used in making flavor candy,  syrup as well as cosmetics and other beauty products etc.
