A drafting committee was formed on August 26, 1947 to draft a permanent constitution and the chairman was Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. The Legislative Assembly met in sessions open to the public for 166 days spread over a period of two years, 11 months and 18 days before the adoption of the Constitution. On 24 January 1950, 308 members of the assembly signed two handwritten copies of the document, one was in Hindi and the other was in English. After two days, which was on 26 January 1950, it came into force throughout the country and India was declared as the Sovereign Republic.
