    Essay on Parrot: Parrot is a colorful, intelligent, playful bird so people prefer to take them as pets. There are many species found in the world. Parrots are found in subtropical and tropical regions as well as temperate regions in the Southern Hemisphere. Most species of parrots are threatened by extinction. Due to Deforestation, they lose their habitat.

    Introduction

    Parrot is a beautiful and intelligent bird species. About 398 species are found in the world. Three types of parrots are found namely “true parrots”, “New Zealand parrots” and “cockatoos”. Most species of parrots are found in subtropical and tropical regions as well as temperate regions in the Southern Hemisphere. The greatest number of parrots are found in Australia and South America. Generally many parrots are brightly colored, and some are multicolored with curved beak, strong legs. Parrots are very intelligent birds just like crows, magpies or jays. People prefer to keep parrots as pets because of their intelligence as well as ability to mimic human speech

    Description of Parrot

    All species of parrots are very beautiful. The parrot which we found in India is called the rose-ringed parakeet or the ring-necked parakeet whose scientific name is Psittacula krameri. Their bodies are covered with beautiful bright green colored feathers. Male bird has a red and black ring around the neck but the female bird has no ring. This medium sized  parrot is about 16 inches long. In captivity, this parrot species can be white, blue, grey, yellow and many other different colors. They have long tails and a curved red bill, long strong legs with sharp talons. Some parrot species are large such as Cockatoos, Macaws and amazons. Their lifespan will be about 80 years. The small species of parrots are budgies, lovebirds, hanging parrots, who can live 15 to 20 years. The parrot species that are usually preferred to keep as pets are amazon parrot, lovebird, macaw, cockatoo, caiques, pionus etc. African Gray parrot is the most intelligent parrot species. The smallest species of parrot is the Buff-faced pygmy parrot, found in the forests of New Guinea. The largest parrot species is Hyacinth macaw, found in eastern and central South America.

    Habitat and Diet

     Rose-ringed parakeets or our known parrots are mainly found in the Indian Subcontinent and Africa but now this parrot species are found in France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and many other parts of the world.

    Rose-ringed parakeets or Green parrots usually eat buds, nuts, fruits, seeds, vegetables, grains etc. In the winter season, this species eats pigeon peas. Some species of parrots are carnivorous, they eat insects, larvae, water snails or grubs. Some parrot species of parrots like swift parrots and hanging parrots consume pollen and nectar.

    Behavior of Parrots

    Parrots are well-known pets. Parrots have the ability to learn and imitate human words. They are quite talkative and not a shy bird. They are very good fliers. They are very playful and enjoy dramatic displays. In the wild, parrots spend their time foraging and food gathering. Parrots prefer to make their nests in tree cavities, often they reused the old nest of woodpecker. They use sticks, dry grass, wood chips, leaves, and other plant materials. Some species of parrots make their nests on the ground, cliffs or banks. The mother birds lay two to three white colored eggs. Ring-necked parakeets or Indian parrots are nor migratory species. The African Gray parrot is the most intelligent parrot species. They have ability at shape recognition, color identification, and the idea of zero or none.

    Parrots are very beautiful, colorful birds but they are threatened for their habitat loss and hunting. “World Parrot Day” is celebrated on 31 May every year. Parrots have been used as symbols of nations such as the Saint Vincent parrot , which is a colorful amazon parrot, is the national bird of a Caribbean nation, namely Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Parrot is also seen on the national flag of Dominica. Parrots have been depicted in music, poetry, storytelling and art for thousands of years.

    Parrot is a common pet bird. Parrots can learn and talk human words. They are also very playful so people prefer to take them as pets. Parrot is bright green in color with a red curved beak and a long tail. Parrots like to eat grains, fruits like guava, ripe mango, red chilies, vegetables etc. Parrots live in the forests or they are kept in the cage. They are very friendly but if  threatened, they can bite or scratch badly. They are found not only in India, but also in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan and many other countries. In the nest, the mother parrot lays two to three white colored eggs. Parrots can live more than 15 years.

All species of parrots are very beautiful, intelligent and playful. Indian parrot is a medium-sized bird, about 16 inches long. Their body is covered with bright green colored feathers. They have powerful curved red beaks. Their strong legs have four toes with sharp claws. They use their toes to hold the food and their strong beak can break the hard nuts. This parrot species is found in the Indian Subcontinent, as well Myanmar, Nepal. Their great enemies are owls, eagles, hawks and any other  big raptors. Parrots are good fliers but the kakapo parrots are not able to fly but are good jumpers and climbers.

    The Indian Ring-necked Parrot is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Parrots are threatened due to hunting, catching and trade. They lose their natural habitat due to deforestation.
