revered in Christianity, who Christians believe is the “Son of God”. Though it

around the world. Christmas comes with joy, peace, love and happiness.
Who was Jesus Christ?
Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure
of Christianity, the world’s largest
religion with about 2.4 billion followers as of 2020. The Christians believe
him the incarnation of God the Son and
Messiah.
According to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Jesus
was born around 4 B.C in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph but the year of his birth
is debated by the scholars. Jesus was born in a stable. He was able to perform
supernatural feats such as walk on the water, resurrect the dead, heal of
diseases by touching people etc. His teachings and miraculous cures attracted
large crowds and people of Galilee (Palestine) started considering him as the
Messiah. Jesus was arrested by the Temple guards of the Sanhedrin in the Garden
of Gethsemane after the “Last Supper” and “Kiss of Judas”. Roman governor
Pontius Pilate gave the final order for the crucifixion. Jesus’s followers
believed that he rose from the dead. After three days of Crucifixion, Jesus
rose from the dead. Jesus’s Crucifixion is commemorated as “Good Friday” and
his resurrection as “Easter Sunday”. The great majority of Christians worship
Jesus Christ as God and celebrate Christmas
The Origin of Christmas
In the past, “Easter” was the main holiday and the
people not celebrated Jesus’s birth. As Bible does not mention date of Jesus’s
birth, Pope Julius I or Sextus Julius Africanus chose 25 December as the
birthday of Jesus Christ in 221. In Rome, the first Christmas was celebrated on
25 December AD 336, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine.
Christmas means Christ-mass and there are different
theories about why Christmas is celebrated on 25 December. One Christian tradition
said the angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive a
son named Jesus by the Holy Spirit. The
Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated
on March 25 (Lady Day), nine months before Christmas.
Many Orthodox Christians and churches still use the
Julian calendar that pre-dates the Gregorian calendar, so they celebrate
Christmas on 7th January. In some part of UK, Christmas is celebrated on 6th
January and called “Old Christmas”. St. Augustine of Canterbury also called
Austin, probably started the wide spread celebration of Christmas in the large
part of England in the 6th century. He was sent by Pope Gregory the Great in
Rome to Britain to Christianize from
Anglo-Saxon paganism and he was succeeded. The Western Europe and Britain
accepted 25th December as the Christmas.
