    Christmas is an annual festival of Christians, held on 25 December to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. Christmas is celebrated by the Christians to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, religious leader revered in Christianity, who Christians believe is the “Son of God”. Though it is a Christian festival but the non-Christians also celebrate the festival around the world. Christmas comes with joy, peace, love and happiness.

    Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Christianity, the world’s largest religion with about 2.4 billion followers as of 2020. The Christians believe him the incarnation of God the Son and Messiah.

    According to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Jesus was born around 4 B.C in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph but the year of his birth is debated by the scholars. Jesus was born in a stable. He was able to perform supernatural feats such as walk on the water, resurrect the dead, heal of diseases by touching people etc. His teachings and miraculous cures attracted large crowds and people of Galilee (Palestine) started considering him as the Messiah. Jesus was arrested by the Temple guards of the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane after the “Last Supper” and “Kiss of Judas”. Roman governor Pontius Pilate gave the final order for the crucifixion. Jesus’s followers believed that he rose from the dead. After three days of Crucifixion, Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus’s Crucifixion is commemorated as “Good Friday” and his resurrection as “Easter Sunday”. The great majority of Christians worship Jesus Christ as God and celebrate Christmas

    In the past, “Easter” was the main holiday and the people not celebrated Jesus’s birth. As Bible does not mention date of Jesus’s birth, Pope Julius I or Sextus Julius Africanus chose 25 December as the birthday of Jesus Christ in 221. In Rome, the first Christmas was celebrated on 25 December AD 336, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine.

    Christmas means Christ-mass and there are different theories about why Christmas is celebrated on 25 December. One Christian tradition said the angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive a son named Jesus by the Holy Spirit. The Feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on March 25 (Lady Day), nine months before Christmas.

    Many Orthodox Christians and churches still use the Julian calendar that pre-dates the Gregorian calendar, so they celebrate Christmas on 7th January. In some part of UK, Christmas is celebrated on 6th January and called “Old Christmas”. St. Augustine of Canterbury also called Austin, probably started the wide spread celebration of Christmas in the large part of England in the 6th century. He was sent by Pope Gregory the Great in Rome to Britain to Christianize from Anglo-Saxon paganism and he was succeeded. The Western Europe and Britain accepted 25th December as the Christmas.

    Originally, Christmas is a special church service to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Many traditions are included with the festival like Evergreen tree that is the symbol of eternal life. Candles are the symbol that says Jesus is the “Light of the world”, Red color represents the blood and death of Jesus and the Bell is symbolized the “Good News”

    Christmas is celebrated not only by the Christians but also by the non-Christians. The people clean their houses and decorate the house with flowers, lights, decorative, coloured papers, bells. Christmas trees, Santa Clause, toys etc. The Christians start their day with special prayers in the churches. The people organize a special meal and enjoy with families and friends. Children are very happy to get a lot of gifts from their parents, relatives and also mythical figure Santa Claus. They baked special rich fruit cakes, cookies, sweets etc. They enjoy the delicious food and they sing carols and fully enjoy the day.

    Many schools, churches organize special events and distribute meals and warm clothes to the needy people, homeless shelters.

    Conclusion

    Christmas is a special day for Christians but it is also a cheerful day for other religions. Christmas comes with good cheer, fun, many gifts, delicious food, holidays and enjoyment with family and friends. Christmas is the time of celebration and festivity. The students get rid of their school life for few days and they can spend a quality time with their families, friends and relatives. The employees get relief from their hard work, stress and work-pressure so they happily enjoy the Christmas.
