    Description and behavior of Butterfly

Butterfly is a small, colorful flying insect. About twenty thousand species of butterfly are found in the world. The body of the butterfly is divided into three parts- head, thorax and abdomen. Their thorax consists of three parts and each part has two legs. Their bodies are covered with small scales and sensory hairs. They have two antennae which are clubbed. Butterflies have two compound eyes, meaning their eyes have many lenses so butterflies can see many things at the same time. Most butterfly species can recognize red, blue, yellow and green colors. Butterfly has exoskeleton, which means their skeleton is on the outside of its body instead of inside. Butterflies have two pairs of scaly wings which move up and down to help them to fly. They are good fliers and can fly around 30 miles per hour but when their body temperature is above 81°F. Some species of butterfly are poisonous and are slower than the non-poisonous species.

Butterflies grow through a kind of development called metamorphosis. The word metamorphosis is taken from a Greek word which means transformation. Their life cycle includes - egg, larvae, pupa and adult. The mother butterfly lays many tiny white or yellowish eggs on the top or underside of the leaves. Butterflies develop in four stages of life, which are called metamorphosis. The caterpillar comes out of the egg and starts to eat a lot. Most caterpillars eat leaves but some species are omnivorous as they eat scale insects and ant larvae. After full growth, the caterpillar stops eating and searching for a suitable place for pupating. In this stage caterpillar produces prothoracicotropic hormone. After choosing a pupation site, the caterpillar spins a cocoon that protects the pupa but some caterpillar species become naked pupa which are called chrysalis. After a few weeks or months, the pupa becomes an imago or adult butterfly.

Butterflies have two front legs, two middle legs and two hind legs and every leg has tarsus, femur and tibia. Butterfly’s legs help it to walk, hang and climb as well as taste the flower or fruit pulp because they have sensors on their legs which are called chemoreceptors.

As the butterflies are cold-blooded, they can not fly at night because they need sunlight to warm themselves.

The colors of the wings of the butterflies depend on the tiny scales which have different pigments. Butterflies' antennae are covered with sensory organs called sensillae which are used to sense scents. Several butterfly species maintain territories.

Butterflies need sodium and minerals for reproduction, so they gather near puddles or damp soil to get the minerals and also drink water.

    Diet of Butterfly

Butterfly flies flower to flower to drinks nectar from flowers. They also consume tree sap, dung, rotting fruits, pollen as well as  flesh of dead animals. Butterflies drink nectar from flowers through the proboscis which give them sugars for energy as well as sodium and minerals. They sit on the flower and the pollen stuck on their feet. When they fly another same species of flower, the pollen carries to those flowers. This process is called pollination that helps to produce new seeds. Butterflies contribute to a rich ecosystem.
